FOUNDATION TIP'S! |
Over the years i have learnt a few tips about how to choose the right type of foundation and the right color for my skintone. In this post i share my learning's and my tips which i have picked up along the way of my beauty-evolution journey.
Foundation is a very tricky thing to get right! And nobody can get it right the first time round, trust me. For a day-to-day life foundation isn't even necessary but its always good to have one or two bottles tucked away for that 'special' occasion. Choosing a foundation requires one to carefully and committedly examine ones skintone-undertone. Whats UNDERTONE you say..??!!?? Undertone is the color/tint just below you skin. Undertones remains the same but the skintone can change over time and does change during the seasonal changes due to sun-exposure etc.
How to know you undertone:- I found out my undertone by the jewelry method. But over all the most famous methods are these :-
- Vein-Test - Turn your wrist upside and closely examine the color of you veins. ex: reddish/pinkish/bluish/greenish.
- Jewelry-Test - Keep gold and silver jewelry next to your skin and watch closely which color suits/flatters your skin the most.
- White-paper Test - Keep a white-sheet close to your skin and watch carefully how the color of your skin looks next to it. Ex: yellowish (warm undertone); peachy/pink (cool undertone); undistinguished/mixture of both (neutral undertone).
- Cool Undertone (blue/purple veins) / silver jewelry
- Neutral Undertone (blue-green veins) / Gold & silver jewelry
- Warm Undertone (green/olive veins) / Gold jewelry
Know you skin-type:-
Skin types are mainly 3:
- Dry
- Combination ( some area's are dry and some are oily ie. t-zone)
- Oily
Choosing the type of Foundation:
1. Finish - The type of finish one wants depends mainly on ones skin-type and also on ones preference, i always go for semi-matte and matte, as i already have very oily skin so i do not want more 'sheen' on my face. There are so many ways brands describe their finish's nowadays but in actuality there are 3 main types:-
- Dewy/Luminizing (fresh/extra sheeny look)
- Semi-Matte (gives the most natural look)
- Matte (shine-free look)
Choosing the color is the most important factor in the foundation-journey as if chosen wrongly it can really make one look like a cartoon!
I look at the majority of the undertone on my face because tanned/olive skintones sometimes have a mixture of both cool & warm undertone ( ie. center of the face is lighter than the outer area of the face). My personal preference is to go with the majority undertone of my face as it will give me a much better coverage and even surface. Also the foundation should seamlessly blend into the neck area and should not stand out.
Testing out new foundation :- Back of the hand is a 'BIG - NO NO!' Our hand and face color is never the same its always 3-4 shades darker if not more.
- Test the foundation at the Back of the jawline to the Side of the neck as that's the most 'neutral' area of the face and also that's the area that determines the seamless blending of the foundation without standing out.
- Natural Light is our friend. Always ask the sales rep to apply the foundation as a swatch on you and go outside in the SUN-LIGHT and see if the color suits you or not.
- Seasons Change so should your Foundation color. During the course of 12 months our skin color changes depending on our sun-exposure or the lack of it. So it's always a good idea to keep examining your skintone timely and changing your foundation-color accordingly.
Results i look for after choosing a foundation:-
- Even/uniform Canvas with seamless blending towards my neck.
- Desired Finish-look of the foundation in regards to my skin type and requirements (ie. longevity/oxidization etc.)
I agree on all the points there Pooja , However which foundations have u found out to be great for ur skin and that makes one look natural and not a cakey mudpie ! I would love to see u recommend some products u swear by .
ReplyDelete@kalyani- i have come to a conclusion after so many years that quality is the best way to go for BASE PRODUCTS. As they are the things that help make the face a great even canvas to work on. I have been in love with MAC Mineralized finish for ages, but lately i have been using the Chanel Vita Lumiere. Having said that i also LOVE using Revlon Colostay foundations its one of the best i have tried so far and i would also recommend L'oreal Tru Match. Both these foundations are extremly good and give a good even and velvety finish.
ReplyDeleteAlso you should try powdering your t-zone only. The whole face always does not require powdering even though one has an oily skintype , like me :).
Letme know if this helps.
